Review of Farrukh Dhondy's Rumi A New Translation

Book Review: ‘Rumi: A New Translation’ by Farrukh Dhondy

The branch exists only to bear the fruit The knowledge of which resides in the root Would a gardener plant and tend the vine Without the promise of the grape and wine? Before this truth let all your reason pause What you thought was effect, is but the cause.

We tell ourselves we’ll enjoy today once we know tomorrow will be okay.

That can be a very long wait.

Meanwhile, we finish dinner without tasting much of it, turn pages we haven’t really read, and miss half a conversation while rehearsing another.

Our reflection on a quote attributed to Isak Dinesen explores when thinking ahead starts taking us away from the life happening around us. There’s a difference between preparing for tomorrow and spending the whole afternoon there.

We meet Sage when she’s doing her best to stay out

We meet Sage when she’s doing her best to stay out of everyone’s way. Night shifts at the bakery help. So does keeping people at a distance.

Then Josef becomes her friend.

He’s kind, attentive, and admired by the whole town. But his past holds a confession that reaches back to the Holocaust. The favor he asks of Sage brings that history painfully close to home.

Her grandmother survived those horrors. Suddenly, listening to an old friend comes with a responsibility she never asked for.

In our review of The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult, we explore the choice facing her.

A frightened mother begs a python to spare her life. In return, she promises that her unborn son will one day return to face it.

The python lets her go.

Then it waits.

Years later, Kakhuigai learns about the promise made in his name. With his family and village elders beside him, he must enter the forests of Manipur and meet the creature that has been waiting for him since before he was born.

But what does the python truly want from him? 🐍

When was the last time you felt completely like yourself?

Perhaps it was an unhurried conversation, returning to an old hobby, or admitting that something you’d worked hard for no longer made you happy.

Those moments can be surprisingly revealing. Especially when we’ve spent years becoming the person everyone expects us to be.

In our latest recommendation, we explore Who Are You? by Prem Rawat, a book that invites us to look beyond our roles and achievements. Its stories and reflections leave us with a question that can feel deeply personal: does the life we’re building feel like our own?

Tap the link in our bio to read the full recommendation. We’d love to know: when do you feel most like yourself?

By nine, Meena is still unpicking her cousin’s wedding blouse. Her dinner has been brought to the sewing room. Another customer’s cream suit lies unfinished on the bed.

It was supposed to be a wedding present.

But every “small” request is taking time she has already promised someone else. And the people asking are people she loves.

How do you explain that being happy to help doesn’t mean you can keep saying yes?

Meet Meena in our latest short story, Only If You Have Time. Tap the link in our bio to read the full story, and save this post for your next reading break.

The project has a folder, a detailed plan, and three possible start dates.

Somehow, it still hasn’t started.

We can get surprisingly good at preparing for something we’re afraid to try. But how do we tell whether we need more information or just a little longer before anyone sees us begin?

In our latest post, a quote attributed to Napoleon has us looking twice at the comforting words, “I’m still working on the plan.”

Five years of love, a silver van, and a goodbye that makes no sense. 🐈

Nana has everything a cat could want: a comfortable home, a human who adores him, and the freedom to act like he owns the place.

Then, without warning, Satoru decides he must give Nana away.

But why?

As the two travel across Japan, visiting Satoru's old friends, we discover fragments of a past filled with memories, friendships, and unspoken emotions.

And the more we learn about Satoru, the more we wonder what he's hiding.

In our latest review of Hiro Arikawa's The Travelling Cat Chronicles, we explore a journey that begins with one very stubborn cat and takes an emotional turn we won't soon forget.

🐾 Would you trust someone else to care for a pet you loved dearly? Tell us in the comments!

What would you do if the treasure you spent a lifetime collecting suddenly made it impossible for you to sleep?

A miser finally fills his clay jar with gold. But that very night, every rustle sounds like a thief and every shadow feels like a threat.

Desperate to escape his fear, he sends the jar away. What follows is a curious journey involving a voyage to Mangalore, a fortunate baker and an elaborate cake no one dares to cut.

Where will the gold finally end up?

You don’t have to be grateful for everything that helped you grow.

That rejection may still sting. The plan that fell apart may still matter to you. Recognizing what you learned doesn’t erase either feeling.

In our reflection on Walt Disney’s words about adversity, we explore the quieter ways we become stronger, including changing direction and letting someone help.

There’s more to moving forward than simply trying harder.

Read the full reflection through the link in our bio. Save this post for a day when you need a little room to begin again.
